Dad never told me I was born on Grandpa Hummer's birthday.  I think he wanted me to have my own special day, but he must have liked knowing it.  jh

Larry, cousin-detective-extraordinaire, hot on the trail of the Hummer Mysteries, has struck family history gold in Ashtabula Harbor today.

Thanks to Ted and Kirk, Larry began his sleuthing this morning with Edward's 1943 Naturalization Certificate and will be receiving 4 PAGES of the original 1904 document from Probate Court tomorrow.   Stay tuned.

Forging ahead with steely sisu, Larry discovered Edward and Hilma's marriage certificate, dated November 23, 1904, which revealed Edward's parents as...drum roll please....  MATTI HUMMER AND MARIA NASKALI.

Larry stayed hot on the trail and connected this afternoon with a neighbor, who says her mother and Edward were cousins and whose mother's maiden name was Naskali.   We will keep you posted on these exciting developments from the shores of Harbor, USA.

August 2005
In August we remember with so much love, Aunt Lil and Uncle Dave, together 70 years, together forever.

We also honor the birthdays of  Robert Hummer on August 9th and Roland Hummer on August 20th, beloved brothers, husbands, and fathers.

Note 2008:  And we remember their Grandfather Matti, who shared Bobby's birthday, August 9.

May we always try to live by the
Hummer-Ollila way of honesty, faith and caring for others.

June 2005
The Hummer mysteries have captured us again.  Current research into the Ohio Census finds a Matt Hummer and Edward Hummer boarding on separate farms owned by Mr. McFarland in Bainbridge Township, Geauga County, 1900.  Matt is still there in 1910, but Edward is living next to the Ollilas with the young Hummer family in Ashtabula.    Could this be our Edward's father ?    Records from the Ohio Historical Society show that a Matt Hummer died in Ashtabula County on June 21, 1917.   Jody has written to inquire further.

In remembrance of our beloved Lil and Dave,
may we always reach for the best they saw in us and know it's there.

My Dad has been gone 20 years.   The most surprising thing I have learned is that I still learn new things from him.   I learned this year that you have to stand up for what you believe and you have to stand up for the people you love.  I learned it doesn't matter if you feel afraid or if people don't care what you believe.  You just stand up, tell the truth and look up for guidance.  You have to let go, let go of ego, let go of fear, walk straight ahead and dive in with the faith of the one true thing that matters most to you.

In honor of Grandma Hilma Ollila Hummer's birthday on May 1, 1886, we remember all she taught us through her children, everyone together again in heaven.   May we carry on the Hummer legacy; to be honest, kind and know that God is always there.

April 20, 2003  Easter
Larry, Jody, Laurie and Mary had Easter Sunday dinner together at Mary's new house in Mesa, Arizona.   Larry brought us chocolate truffles and a huge bouquet of yellow lilies and blue irises.  He is a thoughtful and very special guy, that Hummer.

April 2, 2003
Jody was working on Sunset Boulevard the other day.  She was writing down parking meter numbers for a film permit and saw a group of people at the curb who looked worried about her note-taking.  She went over to tell them not to worry and saw they were tourists.  She asked them where they were from and the man said Vaasa, Finland.  Well, Jody was so excited and said she was a Hummer and Ollila.  The man said the Ollila name was very well-known because Jorma Ollila was the head of the famous Nokia company.   Note:  There are many Ollilas in Finland and we are not related to them all :)  Kari tells me that Ollila farms can be found in all regions of Finland.  Ollila means place of Olli.

Jody asked him about the Hummer name and wrote it down for him.  The man looked at the name and right away, he said "that's a Swedish name."  He told Jody that there are many Finnish people in Vaasa who have always spoken Swedish !  That may be the reason Grandpa Edward's accent was different from the other Ashtabula Harbor Finns ?  That is still a mystery to solve, why Grandpa didn't sound like the other Finns in the Harbor.

Jody asked about Vaasa and the man told her it was very beautiful, with lots of water all around.  He said that everyone had a summer home on one of the islands off the western coast of Finland.  In the winter, they could drive their cars out to the houses on the ice and in the summertime they took boats through the water.   Spring was coming, he said and the land will be ablaze with flowers and green.

Jody helped them find their way.  The man wanted to see anything about Elvis and surprise, there was a place very near with an exhibit of all his guitars.   It was GREAT to connect with these warm people from the homelands of our Hummers and Ollilas.

In honor of Edward Hummer's birthday on February 8, 1883, we found a photo of an Ashtabula Hulett Larry Car in operation.  The rare photo appeared in a 1918 National Geographic.   We wonder if it isn't possible, that Grandpa is working in that Hulett...
Little note: Jody's birthday is February 8, too.

Our dearest Lil was gathered home to her Lord and beloved David today.  We will never stop missing their presence in our lives and we will aways remember the magic of love.   Love still grows.  Always.

May 1, 2002
Today is May Day and Grandma Hilma Ollila Hummer's Birthday.  We honor her and all she taught us.

We received a wonderful letter from her grandson, David Lee, describing his experience operating one of the great Huletts.  David Lee once worked in the very same position held by Grandpa Edward Hummer, 40 years before.
David's informative and entertaining letter is a treasure.
