IRON ORE MINING
History of the Iron Ore Trade 1910
This article appeared in the 1910 Annual Report of the Lake Carriers' Association when the Great Lakes Harbors were the busiest
ports in the world. Contains interesting details about ore schooners and specs on the earliest "Laker" ships, when
even the vessels were made of iron. All in the language of the time.
Story from National Public Radio, titled "Finland was a Poor Country". Describes the life of Finnish Immigrants
on Minnesota's Iron Range, where Victor Ollila went to live in 1900 and near where Edward and his father worked in Upper Michigan.
The Iron Mining Museum of Michigan
The Mining Gallery describes miners and their equipment and Upper Peninsula
communities where Edward went before he came to Ashtabula. The simple, clean pages include maps, names of mines and companies
where he might have worked.
Ishpeming Cliffs Shaft Mine
The Cliffs Shaft Mine in Ishpeming is the best preserved example of an underground iron mining site in the entire Upper Peninsula.
It was the largest and longest-operating underground, direct-shipping, hard ore mine in the Lake Superior Region and the United
States. This paper is interesting for its focus on engineering and design.
